Welcome, Overview of Lessons

Welcome!

In this course, you will learn how to paint this "Piano Man" in watercolor, on a vintage page of sheet music. The fun thing is, you can create this painting on a piece of old sheet music, a page from an old book, or any vintage piece of paper! The painting is sized to fit a standard 11 x 14-inch mat with a 7.5 x 9.5-inch opening. Feel free to resize the drawing to your preference

Throughout this course, I encourage you to make decisions based on your vision for your painting. Use as much or as little of the lessons and drawing as you need. If you lose focus, take a break. You will return with fresh eyes! Allow yourself the freedom to experiment and learn from your experiences, because that's how we grow.

Overview of Lessons

This is what you will see in each lesson, in a nutshell. Each lesson will provide a detailed, step by step guide.

Lessons 1, 2, 3: By the end of these first three lessons, you will have a map of what will be the darkest parts. We will build on this foundation to create additional colors.

  • In lessons 1 and 2, I will use a waterproof black pen to bring out the darkest blacks. The ink will stay in place when applying further layers of color and it will serve as a guide in how dark to take the other colors.
  • In lesson 3, use Winsor and Newton Lamp Black to establish larger shapes of black.

Lesson 4: In this lesson, we will establish the first, pale layers of color. Feel free to use the colors from this lesson or use your imagination and your favorite colors!

Lessons 5, 6:

In these lessons, we will refine color and go darker in value. Layer by layer, it's getting there!

Lesson 7: In this lesson, we will refine color and values in the body, shoe, and head.

Lesson 8: In this lesson, we will make final refinements to the painting! Make decisions based on your vision for your painting. When you are happy with your painting, it's finished!
